Mother’s Day has existed for centuries in many parts of the world. Although it takes different shapes and forms, the day essentially pays homage to the love and nurturing provided by women to their children.
In the past, Mothers were often validated for staying in the home to nurture children and care for the house. In most cultures today, women are appreciated for their range of choices – homemakers and high-powered professionals alike. Whatever a mother’s choice of occupation – whether stay at home or working full or part time – all mothers experience joy when they get to share a meal with their family. Calling forth their own childhood by sharing a special dessert with their children makes a family feast even more joyous!
The enjoyment of food creates many happy memories. I remember sharing warm homemade brownies with my own mother; that was by far her favorite treat. When I had my own children, I was thrilled to add to those memories all those nights we sat up munching on warm chocolate chip cookies and sipping milk. For those of us who are not lucky enough to still have our Mom’s around, we can celebrate their memory and remember how much love and guidance they gave to us, even as we became adults. No matter what our age, we nurture ourselves, our moms, and our children on Mother’s Day…
On Mother’s Days past when my kids were very young, I wanted nothing more than for their father to whisk them away for half the day so that I could have some peace and quiet! As they have gotten older, I can’t wait to spend some time with them that day (they are grown and in their 20’s). It is still important for me as a Mom to be acknowledged and to know that they will take time out of their day to be with me. Of course, being who I am, that always includes food and incredible, sweet ending to the meal!
Mother’s Day is an acknowledgement and celebration of the love that all children have for their mothers and other adults who ‘mother’ them! Here at Rosie’s we love to celebrate mother’s day with amazing desserts. Eat, enjoy, and make memories!
